Strength in Stillness
Courage is a striking animal portrait that captures the quiet authority, resilience and dignity of the lion. Rendered predominantly in white, charcoal and black with expressive touches of gold, the lion emerges dramatically against a deep, almost uninterrupted background. The limited palette and heavily textured surface shift the focus away from realism alone, transforming the animal into a powerful symbol of inner strength.
In this work, however, courage is not portrayed through aggression. It is found in stillness, composure and presence.

The Artist’s Vision
The artist envisioned Courage as a portrait of inner strength rather than outward power.
The choice to depict the lion in profile and at rest was intentional. Courage is often represented dramatically through action, confrontation or victory. This painting offers another interpretation: courage can also be quiet.
It can be the strength to remain composed when circumstances are uncertain. The determination to continue when the path has been difficult. The confidence to stand firmly without needing to announce one’s power.
The contrast between the luminous lion and the dark background reinforces this vision. Darkness exists within the composition, but it does not overwhelm the subject. Instead, it makes the lion’s presence more visible.
The textured, imperfect treatment of the mane is equally significant. Rather than presenting strength as flawless, the artist allows every ridge, mark and irregularity to remain visible. They become part of the lion’s character.
At its heart, Courage is a reminder that true strength does not always roar. Sometimes, it is found in the quiet certainty of knowing what we have survived, what we stand for and who we have become.
