The Courage to Bloom Differently
Against the Grain is an expressive floral painting that celebrates individuality, resilience and the courage to flourish in unexpected places. A luminous flower in shades of ivory, golden yellow, peach and soft pink emerges boldly against a textured, wood-inspired background of earthy browns and muted metallic tones.
Created within the tradition of floral art, the painting uses the natural beauty of a flower not simply as a decorative subject, but as a means of expressing emotion and symbolism. Floral painting has long allowed artists to explore themes of beauty, growth, fragility, renewal and the passage of time. In this work, those familiar ideas take on a more contemporary meaning.

A flower has found an unlikely place to bloom.

This is the story behind Against the Grain.
The flower represents the individual who chooses a path that may not always follow expectation. The grain behind it symbolises convention, predetermined direction and the invisible lines we are often encouraged to follow.
Yet the flower does something different.
It grows outward.
It occupies its own space.
It blooms according to its own nature.
The contrast is intentional. The background carries the weight of structure and experience, while the flower brings lightness, possibility and renewal. Neither exists in opposition to the other. In fact, the strength of the background makes the delicacy of the bloom even more striking.

The intention is to challenge the idea that we need perfect circumstances in order to flourish.
Like the flower, we may sometimes find ourselves growing in environments that feel restrictive, unfamiliar or different from what we imagined. Yet those circumstances do not have to determine the direction in which we bloom.
There is also strength in the flower’s softness. It does not become hard simply because its surroundings are rugged. It remains luminous, open and unmistakably itself.
